My wife and I set our thermostat back at night to keep the house cooler for sleeping as well as to lower our heating bill. In January I noticed that a fine layer of white mildew started coating the shoes and clothes in our bedroom closet.

The letter from the insurance company said an inspector would come to look over the house. He did a pretty thorough job, checking the roof and foundation, the sides of the house, the gutters and the driveway. He found everything in order — no rotting wood surfaces or peeling paint, no cracking or crumbling of foundation walls, no water stains, no mildew or mold.

Mildew is a grey, mold-like growth caused by one of two different types of micro-organisms.

What most horticulturalists and gardeners call mildew is actually powdery mildew powdery mildew, caused by various Ascomycota fungi. There are several species, mildew all pests of flowering plants, called obligate mildew remover parasites. The species that affects roses is Sphaerotheca pannosa var. rosa.
